The campaign to elect Johnny Magee Mayor of Laurel is excited to announce the OFFICIAL CAMPAIGN KICKOFF on March 19 - 5:30 p.m. at the Laurel Train Depot located at 230 N. Maple Street.

Enjoy some refreshments and hear Johnny share a few words of vision for our city and the campaign.

This is another occasion for the Laurel community to get to know Johnny on a more personal level, hear about his plan as mayor and learn about his 23+ years of service to our community.

Jones County Junior College representatives joined dozens of Mississippi community college students as they flooded the Capitol in Jackson Feb. 28 to ask their legislators to continue their support of Mid-Level funding.   

In 2007 legislators promised to fund the colleges at the Mid-Level point – per-student funding halfway between K-12 education and the regional public universities – but the community colleges are only getting 52 percent of the promised funds.

Last year in Mississippi, uncompensated care, those costs incurred in treating uninsured patients, totaled $525.5 million.  Of that amount, $315 million was not covered by any federal reimbursement program and was, instead, passed on to Mississippi taxpayers.

House Democratic Caucus Leader Bobby Moak (D – Bogue Chitto) said, “Mississippi hospitals and taxpayers make up for uncompensated care through higher taxes and higher costs for healthcare.”

Epilepsy patients receive good news just in time

Members of the Epilepsy Support Group in Laurel were excited to learn at a meeting Thursday night that one of their main goals as an organization had been accomplished.

Every state has restrictions on Epilepsy patients driving after having a seizure until it can be controlled.  Until recently, Mississippi was one of only nine states that required them to wait a full year; even most of those offer exceptions. Local Neurologist, Dr. Aremmia Tanious, M.D. announced that Mississippi legislatures had changed the law, only requiring a 6-month waiting period.
