Laurel church to help Operation Christmas Child | News
LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- Members of one Laurel church are getting a head start on helping the needy this holiday season. The folks at Houston Road Baptist Church hosted a kick-off event Thursday night for Operation Christmas Child.
That charity provides holiday shoebox gifts to underprivileged children in more than 100 countries.
Featured speaker was Renan Perdomo, a Petal resident and native of Honduras who was one of the first recipients of a shoe box gift 20 years ago.
"When I was in Honduras, I always wanted to meet the people who packed the shoe boxes," Perdomo said. "And now that I'm here in the United States and I get to see how these shoe boxes are being packed, it's just like, wow, this is amazing, I get to do it now," he said.
"Most of these children will not receive a Christmas present otherwise and the more important part of that is we want them to know that someone cares about them and loves them and ultimately, we want to share the love of Jesus Christ with them," said David McPhail, local coordinator for Operation Christmas Child.
