Jones County officers get a refresher on domestic violence laws

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- Jones County law enforcement officers are freshening up on the law to better assist victims of domestic violence.

Wednesday, the Laurel Police Department hosted a seminar to educate officers on how the law has changed over the last couple of years. Authorities said the law is much stiffer now when it comes to stalking and strangulation.

Police say millions of people are victims of domestic violence but never report it.

Thousands come out for Mother's Day Blues Festival

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- The 25th silver anniversary of Laurel's annual Mother's Day Blues Festival reeled in over three thousand people. 

Tents littered the South Mississippi Fairgrounds as residents listened to blues stars like TK Soul and Sir Charles Jones perform live.

Promoter John Reid said this could possibly be a record turnout. "It's been a lot of preparation for a day just for moms. I'll have to tally the numbers, but I think this would have to be a record number of people," said Reid.

Lauren Rogers Museum of Art holds faculty exhibition

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- You can find art from those who know it best at May's Mississippi Art Faculty Juried Exhibition at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art.

The exhibit features work by some of the state's leading artists from four-year colleges and universities. You can find 60 works by 51 artists from 13 different schools at the exhibition.

Best of Show has been awarded to Chung-Fan Chang for his oil painting "Han's Land."

June 27th will be the final showcase of the exhibit.

JCJC graduates it largest class ever

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM)- JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - On Friday, Jones County Junior College graduated its largest class ever, as it marked its Centennial.

School officials say more than 600 students walked across the stage to receive their associate degree during two ceremonies at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

Many of these students will be moving on to other colleges while others will be going into the workforce.

JCJC President Jessie Smith says despite what their tomorrow holds, each of these students have reached another milestone.

Laurel inches closer to completing redistricting

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- The City of Laurel is one step closer to passing a plan for redistricting.

Redistricting Chairman, Trey Chinn, said everything is moving along smoothly. Chinn said Laurel has gained a few hundred residents since 2000 and district lines had to be redrawn.

Chin said Ward 2 saw an increase in residents while several other wards saw a slight decrease.

Chinn said the city's final plan will be submitted to the justice department in a few weeks.

Karen's Law dies after receiving abortion amendment

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- In 1988, 15 year old Jones County resident Karen Knotts, was kidnapped, raped and murdered. The man convicted was her stepfather James Pugh. He was sentenced to life in prison, but became eligible for parole this year.

Karen's Law, a Mississippi bill named in her honor, set out increase the sentence of manslaughter from 20 years to 30 years.

"Well, the bill originally passed the senate with a vote of 51 to 0," explained Senator Chris McDaniel.

Laurel man arrested for shooting in the street

LAUREL, MS (WDAM)- Jack Hales, 24, is behind bars after opening fire in the middle of a south Laurel Road.

Police said Hales shot numerous rounds into a vehicle on South 17th Avenue around 2 a.m.

Police said Haul turned himself into police Sunday afternoon.

He remain in the Jones County Jail on aggravate assault.
