The three and four year old classes at Main Street UMC Preschool rode a train from Hattiesburg to Laurel on April 26.

After the train ride, the kids had a snack outside of the train depot in Laurel.

Forrest General Encourages Pine Belt to Celebrate National Walking Day

Lace up your sneakers and make a pledge to live a longer, healthier life! National Walking Day, celebrated April 4, is part of the American Heart Association’s movement to get more people walking—at work and at home. This day calls on all Americans and their employers to incorporate at least 30 minutes of brisk walking into their day. Forrest General is the AHA’s exclusive National Walking Day partner, and is supported by the Pine Belt Wellness Council and the City of Hattiesburg in celebrating National Walking Day as an opportunity to get the Pine Belt moving toward better health!

Spirit of Women to present “Girl Talk”

Girls ages 8-11 are invited to attend the upcoming session of “Girl Talk,” presented by Forrest General’s Spirit of Women, to learn about the physical and emotional changes that happen during adolescence.

 During the event, Katherine P. Alexis, M.D., Hattiesburg Clinic family practice physician, will talk with young girls about what they can expect as they enter their teenage years and help unravel the mysteries of the changes that those years bring.

Youngsters enjoy LRMA fest

The front lawn of the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Downtown Laurel was a place of fun, entertainment and learning for hundreds of children who gathered for the museum’s annual Spring Break Festival.

The event, held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, featured critters from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and a  variety of art projects including beaded jewelry, butterfly puppets, face painting, an alligator mural and paper marbling. Jones County Junior College student Kristie Reddoch provided musical entertainment for the event that was free to the public.

Final push to get choir to Carnegie Hall

With less than a month to go another local group has stepped up to help the Laurel High School Select Choir attain its goal of performing at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Committee of the Pine Belt formally presented the Laurel High School Select Choir a financial donation to help them achieve their dream of singing at Carnegie Hall.

As I checked my e-mail this morning, I was thinking that I needed to post something for Mental Illness Awareness Week.  Before I got very far with the thought, I found an e-mail with an op-ed piece written by my friend and counterpart in Tupelo.  She said it so well that I called to get permission to use her material.  Thank you, Debbie Hall, for allowing me to share your work.   Debbie wrote:
