Pine Belt theatre to stage Christian Boy Band Musical | Arts & Culture
The following is a press release from the Just Over the Rainbow Theatre:
Just Over the Rainbow Theatre is proud to present the sinfully spectacular ALTAR BOYZ, winner of the 2008 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical. This high-octane yarn tells the story of a small-town, five-piece male vocal group (Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham) whose angelic harmonies attract the attention of the Big Apple and its decadent excesses. Can the boys resist the delectable indulgences heaped upon their plates? There’s only one way to find out, so don’t miss this hilariously heavenly treat that is suitable for all denominations!
Cast in the hip-hop musical about religion’s impact on our lives are Kenny McMinn of Laurel (Matthew), Chase Rouse of Petal (Juan), John Baxter of Oak Grove (Abraham), Chris Wooten of Hattiesburg (Luke), and Andrew Jones of Stringer (Mark).
The creative team of this rollicking romp includes director Michael Marks, musical director Jackie Thomas, choreographer Kevin Breazeale and technical director Chris Wooten.
School and youth groups will find the antics of this Christian boy band delightful as they set out to save souls around the world! The production is sure to have everyone in the family laughing and singing along. With uncontrollable laughs and lighthearted fun, this award-winning and totally original new musical is 60 minutes of pure delight that's suitable for all ages and will have the whole family laughing and singing along.
Hailed as "high-octane entertainment" (Talkin' Broadway), Altar Boyz tells the holy inspiring story of 5 small-town boys - Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham - trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time. Their pious pop act, including lyrics like "Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait" and "Jesus Called Me On My Cell Phone," worked wonders on the Ohio bingo-hall-and-pancake-breakfast circuit. But when fate brings them to New York, will the Boyz take a bite out of the forbidden apple? With angelic voices, sinfully spectacular dancing and a touching story, Altar Boyz is destined to rock the masses of all denominations!
The show runs November 27-29 at The Historic Saenger Theater in Downtown Hattiesburg. Curtain is at 8 pm nightly. On Opening Night, Tuesday, November 27, JORT invites its patrons and membership as well as the general public to its annual Membership Gala, to be held at The Venue, downtown, from 5-8 pm, preceding the performance of Altar Boyz at The Saenger.
